Frequently Asked Questions

the following frequently asked questions (FAQ) provide clarity on our services.

What is a specialist family physician?

Family physicians have a broad scope of training. Family physicians go through a 4-years master’s degree programme through any one of the South African medical schools and are employed as registrars at one of the teaching hospitals. This program allows them to study in more detail in other fields of medicine (e.g., internal medicine, gynaecology, obstetrics, paediatrics, etc.). The final examination at the culmination of training is the Fellowship of The College of Family Physicians examinations, thus qualifying as specialist family physician.

The family physician consultation approach is patient orientated.

Is there a difference between a specialist physician and a family physician?
The sole difference is that a specialist physician focuses on internal medicine and only sees adult patients. On the other hand, a family physician practices at primary care level and cares for all family members; children and adults, and community.
